This post already exists in the world – this dude stole my thunder and I really don’t have much to add, except that some of his observations make it clear that he’s from America and not from a multicultural Canadian city with a great deal of British heritage and influence. But here are mine, for what it’s worth:
- not only do people drive on the left side of the road, they walk on the left side of the sidewalk, and pairs of escalators are opposite – the one going up is on the left
- jaywalking is uncommon – you truly would take your life in your hands if you cross against the light in all but the safest, most obvious circumstances
- many women wear a lot more makeup than in Toronto – heavy, well-groomed brows, smokey eyes, flawless foundation. I’ve worn more makeup in the past 6 weeks than I have in 6 years in order to not look dead next to them.
- ok I know he said towel warmers but I have to agree – radiators in the shape of towel hangers in the bathroom are genius
- they still remember Rob Ford – I had emotionally blocked him out so that was a surprise during smalltalk
- they know about Justin Trudeau and approve
- people of all ages get down and boogie on Saturday nights, not just the students
- everyone in Leeds wants to visit Canada and they all want to go to Banff when they do visit
- it’s not an English Breakfast unless you have 5 kinds of protein on your plate (eggs, baked beans, sausage, bacon and black pudding)
- cafes and restaurants don’t necessarily have a toilet for their customers’ use
- shopping online is more on par with US sites; lots of free next-day delivery
- mail gets delivered Monday through Saturday
- grocery stores all have their own store-brand wine, and sometimes it’s pretty good! Sometimes.
- they don’t know how to use an apostrophe here either – plural nouns with unnecessary apostrophes are rampant
- people feel the same way about a 10 pound note that Canadians feel about a 20 dollar bill
